Free Keeper History Check

Find Out How Many Previous Owners a Vehicle Has Had

The number of previous keepers (owners) can significantly affect a used car's value and tell you a lot about how it has been used. A car with many short-term keepers may have had repeated problems. Our keeper history check reveals ownership patterns.

What keeper history tells you

1-2
1-2 keepers
Ideal. Low keeper count typically means the car has been well-looked after by people who planned to keep it long term.
3-5
3-5 keepers
Acceptable for older vehicles. Ask about each change — ex-lease, ex-fleet or inherited vehicles often have more keepers.
6+
6+ keepers
Investigate further. Multiple short-term owners can signal a car that has been passed on quickly due to recurring faults or problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

A keeper history check reveals how many registered keepers (owners) a vehicle has had and, where available, when ownership changed. This data comes from DVLA V5C registration records.
It depends on the vehicle's age. A 10-year-old car with 4-5 keepers is fairly normal. The same car with 10+ keepers suggests it has been passed around frequently, which can indicate recurring problems. Short-term ownership (a few months each) is a stronger red flag than the raw number.
The V5C only shows the current registered keeper — not the full history. Detailed keeper history data comes from insurance and registration databases accessed via paid history reports.
Basic V5C date and current keeper signals are included in our free check. Full keeper count and ownership timeline is available in our Silver and Gold paid reports.
