There genuinely isn't one for the free tier, and it's worth explaining why that's possible rather than just asserting it. The free check runs on the same public DVLA and DVSA APIs that GOV.UK itself uses to power its own vehicle tax and MOT checking tools, which cost nothing to query for basic lookups. We're not paying for that data, so there's no cost to recoup by making you sign up or watch ads. Where we do plan to charge is for a genuinely different tier of data — outstanding finance, stolen vehicle and write-off records — which comes from commercial industry databases with real per-lookup costs behind them. That paid tier is a separate, optional product, not a bait-and-switch on the free one.
The underlying data is identical, because it comes from the same source — we're not a competing database, just a different presentation layer on top of the DVLA and DVSA's own APIs. Where this differs in practice is convenience: rather than running separate lookups on separate government tools for tax status and MOT status, you get both together in one search, alongside vehicle details like engine size, fuel type and CO2 emissions that GOV.UK's basic checker doesn't surface in the same view. This page is deliberately broad — a general-purpose free check covering the essentials.
